Alternator Wiring ?

Ok, for all you wiring guru's. Is there any reason that I cannot run the main charging wire (the one on the big post) straight to the large positive post on the starter? Thats where the positive wire from the battery goes. The battery is in the back of the sedan. Why would the charging wire need to go all the way back to the battery? Seems like a waste of wire to me. I know #2 wire jumps to the big post, and #1 goes to the switched circuit.

You can do that but you must use a 70amp maxi fuse and holder somewhere in that wire. If it happens to go to ground it will burn the car down in short order. I might add, even if you choose to go back to the battery hot terminal, use the maxi fuse, also a number 8 gauge wire is what you want if you have a good sized alternator.

Whatever you do, I wouldn't use a fusible link in lieu of a fuse, they get hot and can ignite a fiberglass car,

Thanks for the input Steve. I talked to an electrical pro just this morning about this. Basically said the same thing. I thought there would be no reason it wouldn't work. I have the fuse also. Should finish wiring in a couple days. A little goes a long way..
